About the Calendar.
While we were making this calendar the official statistics for women in the UK developing breast cancer at some point in their lives rose from one in nine to one in eight, a reminder of how many of our lives are touched in some way by the disease. Late in 2009 our village lost Lynn Mudd to breast cancer. She was a local parent and our school cook and the church was full for her funeral, which was held by candlelight as heavy snow had brought the power cables down. A few days later, at 'ladies night' in the Baker Arms, the idea for the calendar was born. We wanted to do something life-affirming, to commemorate Lynn's life and also to celebrate the changing seasons in our part of the world.
The creative energy and inspiration came from our photographer, Melanie Strover, who persisted in the face of all challenges, finding models willing to calm excitable lambs, climb trees and wobbly ladders, sit in a leaky boat, keep ahead of the combine harvester, and even be dumped unceremoniously on the frosty ground by a bolting horse! I think I can speak for us all in saying we are delighted to be involved in the project and help raise funds for such worthwhile charities. We would particularly like to thank Vikki Adkins of Hertfordshire Breast Unit Appeal, who buoyed us up with her energy and encouragement. And finally to remember Lynn, who we hope and believe would have applauded our efforts.
